Asbestos disposal cost: skips, collections and council options

Asbestos can't go in a normal skip or your household bin. It is hazardous waste with its own disposal chain, and disposal is a real share of every removal quote. Here is what the options typically cost in 2026.

Small asbestos skip prices are quoted per job rather than listed, so for a few sheets the comparison is the council route or a licensed collection, both priced in the table above. All figures are typical 2026 quotes and vary widely by council and region; council policies on asbestos differ street by street across the UK, so check your own council's rules before moving anything. Removal contractors' prices normally include disposal, which is often the cheapest route overall, get quotes that itemise it.
The rules that shape the price
- Asbestos waste must be double-wrapped or double-bagged in heavy polythene and labelled before it moves anywhere.
- It can only be carried by a registered waste carrier and only accepted at sites with the right environmental permit, with consignment notes tracking it; gov.uk's hazardous waste guidance names asbestos as hazardous waste and sets out the duty of care.
- A cheap man-with-a-van price with no paperwork is how asbestos ends up fly-tipped, and the fine can land on you, not just the carrier: under section 34(2A) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 a householder who does not take reasonable steps to check the carrier is authorised can be given a fixed penalty, which councils in England set between £150 and £600 (gov.uk).
Keeping disposal costs sensible
- Ask your council first if you only have a few sheets; a free or low-cost household route beats any commercial collection.
- Get removal quotes with disposal included and itemised, so you can compare like with like.
- Keep the consignment note. It is your proof the waste went where it should.
